Poker is a card game played between a number of players. The game may be played in a variety of ways but the majority of games involve betting. Players make bets by placing chips (representing money) into a pot when it is their turn to act. The highest ranked hand wins the pot. A player can also win by bluffing (announcing that they have a good hand when they don’t).

There are many catchy expressions in poker, but none more important than “Play the Player, Not Their Cards.” This means that your success at the table is determined not by your cards but how your cards compare to those of the other players. For example, if you have a premium starting hand like a pair of Kings or Aces, it is crucial to bet aggressively from the outset.

The game is normally played around a circular or oval shaped table with a fixed number of seats and the dealer position, called the button, passes clockwise after each deal. Before the game begins the deck is shuffled and cut by the first player to the left of the button. This card is then placed face down in front of each player. There are then one or more betting intervals where each player has the option to check, raise or fold their cards. Once the fourth and final community card, the river, is dealt everyone has a chance to bet again.
