Casino

A casino is a gambling establishment where a variety of games of chance can be played. In addition to gaming tables, casinos may also feature restaurants, entertainment and shopping. Casinos are usually located in or combined with hotels and resorts. They are also found aboard cruise ships and in some cities and towns.

Although a lot of money is pumped into musical shows, lighted fountains and elaborate themes to attract patrons, the bulk of a casino’s profits come from games of chance. Slot machines, blackjack, roulette, baccarat and craps are some of the most popular games in modern casinos.

Gambling probably predates recorded history, with primitive protodice and carved six-sided dice among the earliest archaeological finds. However, the casino as an organized place to find a wide range of gambling activities under one roof did not develop until the 16th century, when a craze for gambling swept Europe and Italian aristocrats would gather in private clubs called ridotti to play their favorite games.

As gambling became more acceptable in American society, state lawmakers changed laws to allow casinos in Atlantic City and on Indian reservations. Today, there are dozens of legal casinos around the world, and many more offshore operations. Although some of these have a reputation for being dangerous and rife with cheating, most are legitimate gambling establishments. But gambling is addictive, and studies show that compulsive gamblers generate a disproportionate amount of revenue for the casinos they frequent. This money is diverted from local spending and the cost of treating problem gamblers often reverses any economic benefits casinos might generate for a community.
